I am performing a research project on car technology. My primarily focus is
on "how computers are affecting the auto industry." This is for a computer
science class that I am taking at East Stroudsburg University… Issues in
the Practice of Computer Science.
My plans are for my project to focus on the following:
__How GPS will be (or is being) used in cars?__
Possible uses include weather reports, traffic reports, and construction
reports that advise the driver (or the car) to take an alternate route that is
automatically plotted on the dashboard’s GPS monitor. The auto mapping
capability that tells you how many miles you are away from your destination
(home, work, mall, beach, etc). Being able to plot the quickest, scenic,
leisurely Sunday afternoon, or any other type of custom auto-mapping to the
destination that the driver wants.
Automatic reporting of car’s location to the police if it is stolen. Avis
Rent A Car used this technology in their celular phones. It also allowed for
a panic button that would alert the police of the driver’s immediate location
if they were in danger. See http://198.80.36/88/popmech/tech/U025V.html for
more information.
Navlab has been conducting research on cars driving themselves with the aid of
GPS. See http://198.80.36.88/popmech/tech/U115P.html and
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/project/alv/member/www/navlab_home_page…. for
more information.
__How will voice recognition be (or is being) used in cars?__
To turn on any instrument by simply speaking a simple command… "Set max
speed to 55" (cruise control) or "Set radio to WDRE" or anything else along
these lines.
__How will sensors be used in "crash proofing" a car?__
Cruise-control sensors detect when a car is a blindspot. The car then helps
keep the driver from over steering and braking at the last second to dodge a
collision. This is an idea that Dada-Acquisition System for Crash-Avoidance
Research (DASCAR) has begun testing.
__How will virtuality help in car design?__
Ford has been using Fakespace Inc. and Sterling Software in this practice.
__How will personal rapid transit (PRT) change public and private
transportation?__
See http://weber.u.washington.edu/~jbs/PRT for more details.
These are but a few points that I have been investigating for this project.
If you have other ideas, sources, or anything else that might be relevant
please email me.
