You need to get special indexing washers for this.  Moroso and similar
companies make these and you can get them at most speed shops.  I tried
them on a 351 clev but didn’t notice the difference, but I may have been
indexing them in the wrong place.  Anyway, they’re cheap so I would
definitely give them a try.

Electrical Problem/89 Ford Probe GT

Hello,

If this is an inappropriate forum for this kind of query, please tell me
where I might ask my question.

I have an 89 Ford Probe GT (2.2l i-4 Turbo) with 104k kms. Just recently,
when I arrived home, I killed the engine, and then all of the courtesy
lights sprang to life and would not go off, until I pulled the fuse. Now,
when I started the car again, the lights dimmed and shut off as they are
supposed to, but the same thing has been happening whenever I shut off the
ignition.

Pulling the fuse is a pain, as I lose my clock setting, radio presets, and
trip computer memory. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where I might
look for the short? The door pin switches are not the source of the
problem, I checked them already. My car is absolutely loaded with little
electronic gadgets–not my choice, I bought it second hand.

Ideas?

Jeff

GPS, PRT, BITS, DASCAR, and the auto industry

I am performing a research project on car technology.  My primarily focus is
on "how computers are affecting the auto industry."  This is for a computer
science class that I am taking at East Stroudsburg University…  Issues in
the Practice of Computer Science.

My plans are for my project to focus on the following:

__How GPS will be (or is being) used in cars?__
Possible uses include weather reports, traffic reports, and construction
reports that advise the driver (or the car) to take an alternate route that is
automatically plotted on the dashboard’s GPS monitor.  The auto mapping
capability that tells you how many miles you are away from your destination
(home, work, mall, beach, etc).  Being able to plot the quickest, scenic,
leisurely Sunday afternoon, or any other type of custom auto-mapping to the
destination that the driver wants.

Automatic reporting of car’s location to the police if it is stolen.  Avis
Rent A Car used this technology in their celular phones.  It also allowed for
a panic button that would alert the police of the driver’s immediate location
if they were in danger.  See http://198.80.36/88/popmech/tech/U025V.html for
more information.

Navlab has been conducting research on cars driving themselves with the aid of
GPS. See http://198.80.36.88/popmech/tech/U115P.html and
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/project/alv/member/www/navlab_home_page…. for
more information.

__How will voice recognition be (or is being) used in cars?__
To turn on any instrument by simply speaking a simple command… "Set max
speed to 55" (cruise control) or "Set radio to WDRE" or anything else along
these lines.

__How will sensors be used in "crash proofing" a car?__
Cruise-control sensors detect when a car is a blindspot.  The car then helps
keep the driver from over steering and braking at the last second to dodge a
collision.  This is an idea that Dada-Acquisition System for Crash-Avoidance
Research (DASCAR) has begun testing.

__How will virtuality help in car design?__
Ford has been using Fakespace Inc. and Sterling Software in this practice.

__How will personal rapid transit (PRT) change public and private
transportation?__
See http://weber.u.washington.edu/~jbs/PRT for more details.

These are but a few points that I have been investigating for this project.
If you have other ideas, sources, or anything else that might be relevant
please email me.

Thank you for your help,

Andrew Freeman

driving lights: yellow/white?

What driving lights give best vision?
I know have yellow H4 driving lights with *low* yellow
fog-lights.

Is that a good setup? Better then white driving/fog lights?

Is there a difference between different H4 lights? I heard once
of Osram H4 all-season (I believe they were called like this)
lights which should give more light?

Is the gossip true that yellow lights give better sight in fog?

Brake balance with a mini spool fitted

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me how fitting a mini spool to lock the left and right
hand rear axles together is going to effect brake balance.

With the spool fitted one rear wheel cannot lock independantly of the
other rear wheel so I guess this makes it less likely that a rear wheel
will lock when the car is going into a corner and therefore you could
run more rear brake bias and make use of the extra braking force
available at the more highly loaded outside rear wheel.

Can anyone speak from experience on this topic, ie someone who has run a
spool and has noted the effects.

Thanks in advance, DC

PS I and refering to a full bodied front engine V8 vehicle with
independent front suspension and a live axle leaf spring rear suspension
running a 9" diff. Similiar to an early Mustang or Camaro. Weighs approx
1400kgs, racing compound street tyres etc etc

New GP Gadget

In the OZ GP, I noticed all the cars had what looked like an aircraft
style antenna at the top of the airbox. Anybody know what this is?

Need advice for High Performance Muffler and air filter

I have just purchase a 95′ Mitsubishi Eclipse GS and i am ready to make
some modification. First, I’d like to know what kind of high performance
muffler is recommended for this kind of car. I heard that Racing sport
Akimoto, Sebring and greedy performance exhaust are quite famous. Again,
i got unsufficient information about those products. For air filter,
which one between K&N and RS akimoto is good? What is the different in
changing with the filter injetion performance kit and just the airflow
systems with piping..? Any suggestion and comments would be appreciate.
Thanks!
